Pittsburgh

America’s Best Places Rank: 24th
Population: 313,118
Mayor: Luke Ravenstahl

Why it’s ranked: Located where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers join to form the Ohio River, Pittsburgh has green parks as well as broad rivers that provide a pleasant backdrop to what used to be an industrial center based on the steel industry. The new drivers of Pittsburgh’s economy—technology and health care—helped the city prosper through the recession, with low unemployment and a low foreclosure rate. Oh, yeah, they have pretty good pro sports teams too.
