In the southwest part of the state, near the Tennessee border, Benton is the Marshall County seat. The town of just over 4,000 is surrounded by national parks and is close to Kentucky Lake, the largest man-made lake in the U.S. east of the Mississippi. In addition to providing hydroelectric power for the region, the lake is a popular weekend and sporting destination for Benton residents. Despite its small size, Benton offers a nice variety of amenities, including a Wal-Mart Supercenter and a number of restaurants.
