Why he’s on the list: Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas made 2011 a memorable year, setting a new record for save percentage in a season, at .938. Thomas also had no small part in the team’s Stanley Cup victory: He won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goaltender and the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs. Off the ice, Thomas caused a stir on Jan. 23 when he declined an invitation to the White House with his team to meet President Obama, saying in a statement that he believes “the federal government has grown out of control.”
