Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)
In a large vacuum tube, a thin electron beam scans across the back of the display screen. The beam causes a coating of phosphorescent chemicals to emit light that comes out, through the glass, as little dots, called pixels. CRTs are durable and cheap to make, but they hog a lot of space in the home.
