In a panel discussion, usually including two or three luminaries from leading British and U.S. universities, moderator Melvyn Bragg manages to keep academic abstractions to a miniumum while maximizing the historical connections to the present, and even creating a little heat between rival analyses. The obscure topics, which range from a military analysis of the Battle of Agincourt (1415) to the history of angels, are a big part of its charm.
