”My son, Thor, got into doing these superlong treks that are very popular up here. For rivers, he used a little boat that’s great for floating five feet off of a lakeshore, but put it in the river and it’s a nightmare. Every night his group had to allot two hours to repair their boats. Thor came back and he was so frustrated. He said,
‘Oh, Mom, can’t you make me something better?’ I started thinking about it and said, ‘Well, yeah, why not?’ I’d been designing clothing, and I’d been a kayaker. I understood what I wanted out of a boat. A pattern is a pattern is a pattern.”
