Amazon Light

For several years, Amazon.com has opened up its back-end data and services to outside programmers and Web developers. As a result, a thriving community of developers has been remixing Amazon services and mashing them up with those of other sites. One of the pioneers, Amazon Light, created by Monster.com Web developer Alan Taylor, created stripped-down versions of Amazon's browsing and searching pages that are faster to load.

Although Amazon asked him to remove links to potential rival sites such as the DVD rental site Netflix and Apple Computer's iTunes Music Store from his latest version, it still uses Amazon, Google, and Yahoo data in one place. Says Taylor: "It's very easy to play with some pretty serious data and do whatever you want with it in a weekend."
