Web developer Adrian Holovaty took Chicago crime stats and overlaid them on Google's maps. Type in an address, and up pops a map detailing the latest reported crimes nearby. Or you can specify a crime, such as assault or automated-teller-machine theft, and view on a map where crimes of that type have been recently committed.

"The mash-ups signal a new phase in the evolution of the Web," says Holovaty, who's lead developer at the Lawrence (Kan.) Journal-World's online unit. "It's no longer good enough to assume people go to your Web site to view information. Early adopters are expecting...that they can combine information in ways never originally intended."
