This is a cross-section of multiple injection-molded plastic cells or discs used in Caruso's new concept for chairs -- what he calls "intelligent seating." The cells are joined by six loop springs in varying lengths that cover the seat and back, so the chair responds uniquely to the user's lower, middle, upper back, and lumbar regions. The designer came up with this concept about two years ago.
