Ride the Wind

The Huitengxile wind farm on the grasslands of Inner Mongolia shows what might be possible in China. The facility's 98 wind turbines tower over the landscape, producing some 68 megawatts of electricity -- a figure that could more than triple by 2010.

But coal is still far cheaper. Wind generation costs about 6¢ per kilowatt hour, vs. less than 3¢ for coal power.
