With the fourth anniversary of September 11 upon us even as America starts the long and difficult task of digging out from Hurricane Katrina, disaster looms as a new constant in our lives. New York and New Orleans show that terrorist and natural catastrophes have become very real threats. Design can play a large role in helping us deal with disaster. Here are a number of products and concepts -- all winners of annual Industrial Design Excellence Awards, sponsored by the Industrial Designers of America -- that could play significant roles in helping people when trouble strikes.
