Architecture: The Body Shop

Who else but The Body Shop would think to use hemp panels as a design feature? The British cosmetics and toiletries brand built its name on caring about the environment. In fall 2004, it opened the first of 250 new stores whose design seeks to update the brand's signature dark green tones with softer, airier colors and lighting. Six months later, The Body Shop's retail sales were up 5% over last year, to $1.25 billion.

Created in-house, the new stores feature hemp wall panels and recycled marble and glass for the floors and shelving. Since they cost the same to build and refit as the older ones, The Body Shop didn't hesitate to make the change. Financially, aesthetically, and environmentally, it made sense.
