Ancient Rome used terracotta pots to beef up sound in amphitheatres more than 2,000 years ago. Inspired by this fact, Philips designers created a new generation of high-quality ceramic speakers that were at once decorative, functional, and symbolic. But feedback from analysts and research groups showed that the market wasn't ready for such a radical change in thinking -- and hearing.
