Sometimes the simplest ideas go the furthest. Zuckerberg launched his incredibly popular social-networking startup, Facebook, while a student at Harvard, thinking the Ivy League school was in need of an online student directory. Zuckerberg has since raised more than $13 million from Silicon Valley players like PayPal founder Peter Thiel and Accel Partners.
BusinessWeek Online's top vote getter has been in business only since February, 2004, but Facebook already has 6 million registered users -- two-thirds of whom visit the site every day. Next up: a high school version of the Facebook, as well as expanding the concept by entering the international market.
