GLUCOSE CONTROL
Amylin's Byetta for type 2 diabetes
Patients with diabetes have a new ally: the gila monster. A hormone from that lizard's spit has been turned into a new treatment by Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Eli Lilly. The injectable drug is a superpotent version of a natural human hormone that regulates insulin, which in turn controls blood sugar. It's $2,700-per-year, but most of that will be covered by insurance (800 868-1190, byetta.com).
