Zimbra E-Mail
Watch out, Thunderbird. Another open-source e-mail application is ready to burst on the scene, and it's gathering the attention of Internet service providers. Zimbra, an open-source startup, has developed an innovative new Web-based e-mail with the same name. It relies on Ajax, a technique used to build rich Web-site applications. The idea is you never have to leave the main mail window to check something online or in a calendar. Instead, just move your cursor over a highlighted hyperlink or date, and a small window pops up with the relevant info.
The program was designed for corporate users, but Zimbra has started to get calls from ISPs looking for ways to combat new and improved Web-based mail from the likes of Google and Yahoo!. Following the broader trend, these services won't be branded as Zimbra.
