As the director of the British Design Council's research and development team, RED, Hilary Cottam is applying the principles and methods of design to intractable social problems such as prisons, education, and health care. RED's Touching the State project, for instance, explored how voting, jury service, and the new citizenship ceremony could be redesigned to improve the relationship between government and its citizens.
