With major improvements over the first version, Windows 3.1 sold like hotcakes and provided a huge boost to Microsoft's bottom line. Combined with strong sales from its latest version of Excel and growth in the PC market, Microsoft saw revenues surge 55% in the quarter of its release.

1992 With a net worth of $6.3 billion, Gates tops the list of richest Americans, and at the age of 36 becomes the youngest to do so. Though he later slipped back behind Warren Buffett for a time, he has since regained the title.
