Stuttgart

The City

Population: 590,000

Stuttgart is one of Europe's leading industrial centers, serving as the headquarters for many German companies and as the local base for many multinationals. Its greatest claim to fame is cars: It was here, in 1887, that Gottlieb Daimler and Carl Benz "invented" the first automobile. Stuttgart has maintained its position in the industry ever since: It is the birthplace of Porsche, Mercedes-Benz (whose museum is pictured), and even the Volkswagen Beetle. Stuttgart isn't only about cars, though, it also has Germany's highest density of scientific and academic research organizations, lies at the center of the country's leading wine-growing regions, and proudly features a world-class modern art museum.
