Long time Porsche (PSHG_p.DE) tuner Ruf, based in Pfaffenhausen, Bavaria, is developing an electric version of the iconic Porsche 911 Carrera. The concept's electric motor produces about 200 horsepower, which would make it the least powerful vehicle in Porsche's lineup. However, the electric motor generates 480 lb.-ft. of road-gripping torque, nearly as much as the $194,000 911 GT2. Coupled with the Carerra's stellar sports car handling, the emissions-free concept can whip from zero to 60 mph in under seven seconds and achieve a top speed of nearly 160 miles per hour—vital statistics for a Porsche. Lithium-ion batteries would take about 10 hours to fully recharge and have a range of about 180 miles, on par with Tesla's vaunted Roadster. Design-wise, the concept hides its green technology under a body nearly identical to the beloved 911. For now, it is still unclear that a production version would ever become a reality. The Verdict: Further proof that green and fast are not mutually exclusive. Stuart Schwartzapfel is a regular contributor to BusinessWeek.com.
