BMW's Shape-Shifting Design Study

by Stuart Schwartzapfel

BMW's () GINA Light Visionary Model is a new concept that explores flexible materials and modular manufacturing. (The name GINA is based on the phrase "geometry and functions in adaptations.") Highly conceptual, the model is intended to steer research in new directions, says BMW.

The model has a moldable, changeable "skin" wrapped around a modular internal structure. A highly durable and expansion-resistant textile cover stretches across the car's body, giving designers more freedom in creating dramatic shapes. Individual functions, meanwhile, are revealed only if needed. For instance, the headlights are hidden under a fabric cover when not in use. And the flexible skin opens at the center of the engine cover or can be folded to the far right or left to allow access to the engine's service points.

The Verdict: Car as couture is an intriguing if highly unlikely concept.
