Mercedes-Benz BlueZero E-Cell

By Matt Vella

Mercedes-Benz (DAI) will display a trio of green concepts at the Detroit Auto Show in January. The BlueZero E-Cell is an electric car powered by a lithium ion battery pack that has a range of 120 miles per charge. The BlueZero's electric motor, meanwhile, propels the car from zero to 60 miles per hour in about 11 seconds. Mercedes' designers say the car takes cues from the company's 2005 Bionic concept car, a vehicle that was modeled after tropical sea fish to improve its aerodynamic efficiency. This influence is most visible in the BlueZero's steeply sloped hood and covered rear wheel wells, both of which improve fuel efficiency by reducing drag. The BlueZero, which likely is a foretaste of the company's next-generation compact car design, also shares the Bionic's lime-green paint job.

Verdict: Mercedes-Benz miniaturizes luxury
