Simply Droog: An Antidote to Mass Design
The Dutch collective, known for its humorous reinvention of everyday objects, has a new show at New York’s Museum of Art and Design

From September 21, 2006, through January 14, 2007, New York’s Museum of Art and Design presents “Simply Droog: 10 + 3 Years of Creating Innovation and Discussion.” It’s a survey of clever, inventive everyday objects that have been assembled by the Dutch collective known as Droog Design. Droog is the Dutch word for “dry”—and the collective, founded in the Netherlands in 1993, is known for witty, straightforward, yet conceptual designs. Not a traditional design firm, Droog instead researches, gathers, and displays work by imaginative young designers, at trade shows and other venues. Recently, Droog has started manufacturing some of the sculptural pieces—such as an umbrella that casts tree shadows—as commercial products. Think of them as thought-provoking, highbrow alternatives to Target’s design-for-all wares. Take a look at the classic Droog objects that will be on view in New York.
