"The embarrassing thing is that the salad dressing is outgrossing my films," Newman once said about the product that was the genesis for Newman’s Own. Since 1982, the company, started by the actor with the hope of raising modest amounts of money for charity, has grown to include pasta sauces, popcorn, salsa, lemonade, limeade, and steak sauce. The for-profit company—all proceeds go to Newman, who then donates them—has enabled the actor and his foundation to give more than $200 million to charities that support education.
