US Airways
2006 revenue: $8.77 billion
Employees: 35,000
Headquarters: Tempe, Ariz.
Deal prospects: Moderate
With its scrappy chief executive, Doug Parker, America West swallowed the much larger US Airways out of bankruptcy and switched its name. Now it's going after even bigger prey in Chapter 11: Delta Air Lines. Both sides are pitching their cases to Delta's creditors, and on Jan. 10 Parker anted up more cash to boost his company’s offer to $10.2 billion. Another twist: Delta’s creditors see a deal with bankrupt rival Northwest as a potential alternative, according to the Wall Street Journal.
