Wine Cellar

$70,000 to $75,000

By The Wine Outfitters
Portland, Ore.

Custom wine-cellar builders specialize in transforming musty basements filled with cobwebs and cardboard boxes into elegant wine showrooms that can store thousands of bottles. At a minimum, expect to pay at least $8,000 for a sealed, climate-controlled cellar that will ensure the integrity of your bottles during aging. But you can splurge on the space and you'll get features like display lighting, mahogany woodwork, stone arches, stained-glass windows, and flat-screen TVs.

This wine collector provided The Wine Outfitters with a family photograph of a Roman aqueduct in Provence to suggest a theme for his new cellar. The designers succeeded in creating a rustic, Roman feel in the two-room space, using wall frescoes, stone arches, mosaic tile floors, and murals.
