AUTOS

Renault, VW, Toyota

Innovest gave Toyota top honors for converting environmental virtue into market share. Though not the first with a hybrid gas-electric car in the U.S. -- that honor goes to Honda, with its Insight -- Toyota is the global leader in developing and promoting the technology. After introducing the Prius in 2000 and pricing it to sell at a loss, the Japanese automaker today offers six different hybrids and claims to be earning a profit on the technically sophisticated vehicles. Toyota hopes to sell 250,000 units by 2010. European auto giants Renault and VW earn kudos from Innovest for their commitment to designing eco-minded cars, from fuel-sipping diesels to models designed for easier recycling.
