Hurricane Katrina was the costliest and one of the deadliest storms in U.S. history and caused massive flooding in New Orleans, which in turn caused massive soil contamination from heavy metals and petroleum residue. Cleanup efforts are being considered by Federal and state authorities along with a master plan to rebuild the city.
