St. Mark's Church
Bjorkhagen, Sweden
Architect: Sigurd Lewerents
1959
Holl points to Lewerents' spare, elegant design as an example of successful use of simplicity, stripping the idea of a church down to its barest elements—windows without frames, vaults with raw details such as brick and steel beams—while maintaining a sense of its function as a public place to gather (and worship.) “Each simple element is so endearing,” Holl says.
