Tequila dates back some 2,000 years to when Aztecs living in what is now central Mexico first discovered the juice of the spiky-leafed agave plant. They drank tequila-they called it "octili poliqhui"-on religious holidays, and captive warriors were given the fermented elixir before they were sacrificed to the gods. In modern times, the juice of the gods earned a reputation as the party drink of the proletariat. Since 2000, however, it has undergone something of a renaissance, and is now popular as a premium distilled spirit. Indeed, fancy tequila is one of the fastest-growing types of hard alcohol in the U.S.
