Number of H-1B visas awarded: 4,908
As a percent of labor condition applications: 22%
Infosys, an Indian company that provides outsourcing and other services, submitted 22,600 labor condition applications (LCAs) for 2006, according to the Department of Labor statistics. The company said the workers it needed would ultimately end up in Chicago, New York, Seattle, and other locations. For example, the company requested 100 H-1Bs for employees who would work as programmer analysts in Chicago for between $42,952 and $62,952. It says the prevailing annual wage for such jobs is $42,952.
Senators Chuck Grassley and Dick Durbin have requested detailed information from Infosys and other Indian outsourcers about how they use these visas. Infosys declined to discuss its visa use for this story until it provides responses to the senators' inquiry.
