Albert and Victor Martin-Garcia, Barcelona-based twin brothers and computer engineers, are behind Moneytrackin, a Web-based online tool for managing personal finances that is available in 11 languages and supports 48 different currencies. In the year since the company launched, Moneytrackin has managed some $46 million in more than 180,000 transactions.

The technology allows people to manage all of their personal finances at any time through the Internet and mobile phones. It also lets friends and family manage their common projects and other money needs. For example, roommates could share a Moneytrackin account to handle the group's rent payments or pool their money in one account when they all go on vacation together.

In this way, say the brothers, Moneytrackin applies the community-based and user-generated spirit of Web 2.0 to offer a practical and effective mechanism for everyday use. Moneytrackin attracted its first external financing from Madrid-based serial entrepreneur Martin Varsavsky, who founded Jazztel and is now CEO of Wi-Fi startup FON. The next step is to add social-networking features that let users communicate at both local and global levels on everything from how to lower their electrical bills to where to shop for the best bargains.
