Smart Design is known for its ongoing work for client OXO International, designing its popular Good Grips line of ergonomic kitchen tools, seen here. These sleek, user-friendly gadgets were created adhering to the concept of universal design, meaning the products are usable by all people, from children to seniors. Nasahn Sheppard, director of industrial design at Smart Design and a former student of Fukasawa's at the California College of Arts (formerly the California College of Arts and Crafts), says that Good Grips tools reflect Fukasawa's belief that simplicity and user-friendliness are hallmarks of excellent design.
