Iressa

AstraZeneca

Iressa, for lung cancer, won FDA approval in 2003, even though clinical trials showed that the drug benefited only some 10% of patients. Patients lobbied for the drug because there are few treatments for lung cancer, which kills more people than colon, breast and prostate cancer combined. A later trial found the drug did not increase patients' survival, and in 2005 the FDA ruled that no new patients could be given the drug.
