Japan’s Modern Art Market Awakens
Japan’s art market is finally emerging from a long slump as international and local investors find quality modern works at reasonable prices

The art business worldwide is enjoying a boom. Last year the total value of art sold at Christies’ auctions reached $4.67 billion, a 36% increase from the previous year. However, in Japan, the art market has been in a long slumber, dating back to the bust of the late-1980s “bubble economy.” That is now starting to change, and dealers and individuals in and out of Japan have become enamored with Japanese modern pieces, not to mention with the relative affordability of their prices compared to art from white-hot markets such as China and India. Here are some up-and-coming Japanese artists and their creations:
