Every domain has its all-stars, and business school is no exception. For more than 50 years, inventive professors, such as Warren Bennis, Michael Porter, and Myron Scholes, have revolutionized their fields, all while honing a new generation of genius. But making a large-scale impact in the business world is never easy, even for seasoned academics. "There are a lot of bright people who work long hours and years, and many don't discover anything that leads to a breakthrough," says Hasan Pirkul, dean of the School of Management at the University of Texas at Dallas. "But those who do—it's like winning the lottery."
