"Life online can become very dissociative for people," Champ says. "When you're sitting and staring at a computer for a long time, it's easy to forget that there are other people." She says that's one reason the site's employees are encouraged to actively use Flickr themselves, posting photos and maintaining profiles that other members can view. Says Champ: "I think being present reminds the community that we are all real people with real feelings, not corporate peons."
