Insulet Development Team and Continuum

Bedford (Mass.)-based Insulet (PODD), a maker of diabetes management tools, worked with design-strategy firm Continuum to develop this device, which diabetics wear to receive Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII) therapy. This type of treatment mimics healthy pancreatic function, and requires wearing a patch-like pump that's attached to the skin and which directs insulin into the body via thin tube called a cannula, which is inserted under the skin. This device, which was nominated for an Index: Award this year and won a Medical Design Excellence Award last year, is notable as the first "wearable" pump system and features a wireless a handheld Personal Diabetes Manager (PDM), seen here. This device, currently available in selected U.S. markets, has the intuitive interface of many consumer electronics products.
