The field of at-home, daily diabetes monitoring devices isn't the only area where companies and designers are devising inventive new products inspired by trends in consumer electronics. Seen here is VeraLight's Scout DS, a non-invasive diagnostic tool that screens for diabetes without drawing blood. The innovative technology of this clinical device, used in hospitals, shines wavelengths of light onto the skin, and the proprietary system measures the fluorescent light emitted from the arm—the measurement corresponds to risk for diabetes. The rounded corners, colorful plastic hues, and laptop-computer-like type-pad and folding screen suggest a hip design aesthetic rather than drab beige hospital equipment. The device is expected to get FDA clearance in the first or second quarter of 2008.
