Wieden + Kennedy
Portland, Ore.
Employees: about 350

Designer: Intelligent Design
Completed: 2007

This year, Wieden + Kennedy, the advertising powerhouse behind high-profile branding campaigns for Nike (NKE) and Coke (KO), commissioned interior design firm, Intelligent Design, to create a space for relaxing within the agency. The ceiling and walls of the space were formed by a giant nest that sculptor Patrick Dougherty crafted out of sticks, willow saplings, and interwoven alder. For the interior, Intelligent Design President Bill Fritts used local Portland materials, both natural (an abandoned tree trunk) and not so natural (a thick plate of rusted steel repurposed as a coffee table). Employees use the space for reading and mini-conferencing. So far, no birds have tried to move in.
