Most of Asia's oldest business leaders are company founders at the helm of family-owned businesses. Richard Hu, chairman of Singapore-based CapitaLand, is different. Hu was Singapore's Minister of Finance from 1985 to 2001, and during his career in public service he also served as Minister of Health, Minister of Trade & Industry, Minister of National Development, and chairman of the island nation's monetary authority. In 2004 he became chairman of CapitaLand, which invests in real estate around the Asia-Pacific region and operates 50 malls in Singapore, China, India, and Malaysia. CapitaLand is 39% owned by state-controlled holding company Temasek.
