A recent outage made many Twitter users all too aware of how much they've come to depend on the service for staying in contact with people around the world. "In the last two months a subtle shift occurred," blogger Michael Arrington wrote at the time. "I now need Twitter more than Twitter needs me. It is now an important part of my work and social life."
