BusinessWeek IT 100

No. 20

LG Electronics

Not too long ago, the only electronics name from Korea that mattered globally was Samsung. In 2007, LG Electronics wasn't even on BusinessWeek's IT 100. LG certainly is not a second-tier player now. The stock price has soared 50% so far this year and cell-phone shipments jumped 54% in the first quarter. Now the world's fourth-largest handset maker, the Korean company is closing the gap fast with Motorola. LG has scored with its Chocolate, a skinny handset with a dial pad that glows red. The company also made a splash by teaming up with Prada for a touchscreen designer phone that LG launched three months before the iPhone came out.
