Boston's large number of prestigious design schools, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard's Graduate School of Design, bolstered its standing on this list of design-savvy cities (such establishments spawn entrepreneurs and creative businesses, the thinking goes, in turn elevating design sensibilities). The city also has a series of "green" initiatives in the works, including plans for a zero-energy multiunit residential complex.
