Shockingly few executives take to heart one of D'Alessandro's key points, he says: Keep your personal life private. Doing so helps keep the rumor mill closed. And while D'Alessandro doesn't play down the importance of luck in reaching management's upper echelons, more important is knowing which risks to take and which to walk away from—and when to admit you've taken a risk that didn't pay off.
