GM Firebird I

GM Firebird I

Announced: 1954
High-tech applications: Turbine engine, delta-wing styling with air brakes

General Motors chief stylist Harley Earl designed the body of the Firebird I from fiberglass and reinforced plastic. It was one of 36 dream concept cars of the era, built to explore new styling and engineering ideas. The Firebird I had a plastic fuel tank in its needle nose, ahead of the driver. It had a 370-hp turbine engine behind the driver. According to GM, it was the first turbine-powered car. The "wings" had flaps, controlled from the steering wheel, which acted as air brakes.
