High-tech applications: Gas engine, diesel-style mileage, suspension anticipates bumps
The Mercedes-Benz F700 "research car" has a 1.8-liter gasoline engine that produces an amazing 238 hp through two-stage turbocharging and direct injection. Mercedes-Benz says the "Diesotto" drivetrain produces power equivalent to a 3.5-liter, six-cylinder gasoline engine, with fuel efficiency like a diesel, at about 44 mpg. However, the system requires low-sulfur gasoline, which is not widely available in the U.S. outside California. Diesotto also has an electric motor that adds 20 hp when accelerating. In addition, the car has forward-looking laser scanners that detect bumps and uneven road surfaces. Based on that input, the car automatically adjusts the suspension accordingly.
