Famous American Brands in Non-American Hands

Belgian brewing giant InBev is making an audacious $46 billion takeover play for St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch, and if the deal goes through, the No.1 U.S. beer, Budweiser, will be owned by a European company. That prospect has some people up in arms: After all, it's one thing for foreign companies to buy obscure products and companies, but quite another when they absorb an American icon inexorably linked to the history and culture of the nation.

Yet Budweiser would be far from the first. There are dozens of famous "American" products, ranging from French's mustard to Gerber baby food, that already belong to foreign companies. In many cases, consumers don't even realize it—and sales haven't taken a nosedive since the foreign purchase.

Click on for a look at some of the red-blooded American brands that belong to companies overseas. You may be surprised.
