Gerber

Owner: Nestlé
Country: Switzerland

Gerber baby food appeared on grocery shelves in 1928 after Dorothy Gerber, an enterprising mother in Fremont, Calif., who was tired of straining food for her infant daughter, suggested to her husband that they use their family-owned canning factory to do the work for them. With a smart marketing campaign that gave birth to the most recognizable baby face in America, Gerber has grown to make 190 separate products in 80 countries. The company eventually became a unit of Swiss drugmaker Novartis in the 1990s, and in September 2007 it was acquired by food giant Nestlé of Vevey, Switzerland.
