Most Americans would rather die than live with a disability, according to a recent survey. That startling finding helps explain rapid advances in artificial limb technology, producing the prosthetics that combine microprocessors with lightweight, flexible materials and allow amputees to dance, rock climb, and even compete in athletic events. But those high-tech limbs, like the carbon-fiber blades worn by South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius, cost $10,000 to $15,000, not including regular maintenance. A low-tech prosthetic leg costs around $2,000.
